DEEP BLUE: Kick-off meeting in Trieste

On January 2019 we launched the the new two-years long project "DEEP BLUE: Developing Education and Employment Partnerships for a Sustainable Blue Growth in the Western Mediterranean Region" coordinated by the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics, OGS (Italy) in partnership with the University of Sfax - Department of Life Sciences, US (Tunisia), the Polytechnic University of Madrid - Centre For Support For Technological Innovation, UPM CAIT (Spain) and the Higher Institute of Fishing Technologies and Aquaculture, ISPAB (Tunisia)

DEEP BLUE will promote collaboration between marine and maritime education, research, and training centres to strengthen relevant skills and increase capacity building for blue career development. It aims at developing skills and building capacities throughout enhancing geopolitical dialogue and international scientific cooperation (Science Diplomacy) in the Western Mediterranean Region.

The project integrates the activities set for the 2018-2020 of the Western Mediterranean Forum for Higher Education, Research and Innovation (Dialogue 5+5) endorsed by all member countries (Algeria, France, Italy, Libya, Malta, Mauritania, Portugal, Spain and Tunisia) within the framework of the Work Plan of the Tunis Declaration approved during the inter-ministerial conference held in March 2017. Partners from Italy, Spain and Tunisia with the support of the Italian private maritime company Fincantieri for shipbuilding and ship repair, will strive to develop education and training paths aiming at creating an advanced shared knowledge and common methodological ground on the key sectors of Blue Economy in the Mediterranean basin while fostering North-South and South-South cooperation among public and private stakeholders.

The Kick-off meeting took place in Trieste on the 29th of February and the 1st of March 2019.
These two days were filled with precious discussions among partner institutions and local stakeholders.
This project is co-funded by the European Union’s European Maritime and Fishery Fund (EMFF) and managed by the Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (EASME).
